CSA O86-14 Canadian Wood Code now Available

The new CSA O86-14 code has been implemented in RISA-3D v15.0 and RISAFloor v11.0

To select this code for your design, simply open the (Global) Model Settings and under the Codes tab select CSA O86-144 for wood:

The Detail Reports will display the code that the user has selected for their wood design:

Canadian Wood Design Updates

The latest releases of RISAFloor and RISA-3D include the following updates to wood design per the Canadian codes: Wood Wall Design RISA-3D v16 and RISAFloor v12 now offer design of wood walls per the Canadian wood design codes (CSA O86-09 and CSA O86-14). The design methodology is very much like the Segmented method used by the NDS design codes. Design requires chords on each side of each full height panel. Design assumes that the areas above and below openings have zero stiffness. Only full height piers are considered to resist loading. Additionally, the design of individual panel elements is as follows: The sheathing panel is assumed to resist the in plane shear The chords are assumed to resist the overturning moment The studs are assumed to resist the axial load The hold downs are designed for the governing tension chord force at the base elevation of the wall Deflections, including the effects if hold-down elongation, are calculated per the code based equation For more information on wood wall design, please see the “Wood Wall” topic in the program help file. Mechanically Graded Wood Design now Available

Mechanically graded wood materials have been added for the AWC NDS 2015 design code per Table 4C, and CSA O86-14 design code per tables 6.3.2 and 6.3.3. This specification includes the updated MEL and MSR design values. A Mechanically Graded material can be selected in the Material spreadsheet in the Wood tab. The user can choose any of the existing species that are applicable, per NDS table 4C Footnote 2, from the Species dropdown menu. The shear capacity design value, Fv, depends on the species selected for the material. There are 85 new grade options available in the Grade dropdown menu from the MSR and MEL tables in the code. The Custom Wood Properties dialog now allows the user to input more specific material. Mechanically Graded wood materials can be utilized in this dialog by choosing MEL or MSR in the Type dropdown menu. To access the Custom Wood Properties input dialogue, click the Custom Wood button on the Advanced tab. This can also be accessed In the Wood Material Properties spreadsheet by selecting Custom from the Type dropdown menu, and then click the ellipses in the Species cell.
