Experience RISA-3D v21 User Interface Enhancements

RISA-3D v21 now offers a modern user interface that allows users to more easily utilize the tools and features that make RISA-3D great. RISA-3D's latest interface has engineers' workflow in mind. With an updated interface to match the Windows 11 update, users will experience greater ease of use across the operating system. With a logical left-to-right, tab-by-tab ribbon approach, RISA-3D makes it effortless to progress through a model from its conception to its final optimization by simply following the icon sequencing. The latest ribbon updates also feature tabs to lend organization to RISA-3D's many functionalities.

RISA-3D's improved Template wizard automatically updates the graphical preview based on user properties. Click through the tabs or use the Next button to use the improved Template wizard.

Using Redesign Lists in RISA-3D

RISA-3D includes Redesign Lists that are used to optimize hot-rolled steel, cold-formed steel, dimensional lumber, and concrete beams and columns. Although, the criteria used for this optimization is the Design Rules, the sizes must be chosen from the available sizes in the Redesign List. It is now possible to add, modify and update the Redesign lists for various material directly in RISA-3D. To access the redesign lists from within RISA-3D click the Redesign Lists button on the Advanced tab. Once the dialog opens, it is possible to create new redesign lists and modify or delete existing ones. Modify an Existing Design List To make modifications to a specific design list first choose a Database, Member Type, Shape Type and Design List. Then choose which shapes to add or remove from the selected list and click OK to finish modifying the list. Create a New Design List To create a new Design List, first click New and then enter a List Name. Then select shapes from the Available Shapes list to add to the Current Design List. How to Apply Notional Loads in RISA-3D

In RISA-3D you can automatically apply notional loads to your structure to comply with your steel code (such as AISC 360). Notional loads take into account a building’s actual out-of-plumbness by adding de-stabilizing lateral loads. The AISC 360 recommends either 0.2% or 0.3% of the vertical loads be applied at each floor level. You can quickly add these loads to your model by going to the Insert menu and selecting Notional Loads. In order to calculate the notional loads a diaphragm must be defined per floor level. The weight of each diaphragm is defined by the load combination (LC for Story Weights) selected. Since only one load combination is selected, you should select the worst-case for vertical loading. Once you’ve created the notional loads, you’ll find them listed in the Basic Load Cases spreadsheet and they will be applied to your model at each floor level at the center of gravity location. You might find that there are new “floating” nodes created at the center of gravity of each diaphragm. What Are the Seismic Design Rules in RISA-3D

The Seismic Design rules can be found in RISA-3D on the Data Entry toolbar or in the Spreadsheets menu. Below is a quick-reference description of the entries required. For further information refer to the Online Help File > Seismic Detailing. Label The label can be any description - it does not affect the analysis/design. Frame Ductility High - Meets the requirements for Special Braced and Moment Frames. Moderate - Meets the requirements for Intermediate Moment Frames. Minimal - Meets the requirements for Ordinary Braced and Moment Frames. Overstrength Check this box if this member type requires Overstrength Load Combinations.
